Marriage License

Virginia Beach Marriage License Information

A Virginia marriage license is required for all weddings in the state of Virginia!  You may obtain your marriage license from any courthouse in the state of VA, regardless of county or city. Bring this license (and everything the clerk gives you) on your wedding day & give to your officiant to fill out, and they typically take care of sending that signed license back to the courthouse unless you choose to hand carry it back (must be done within 5 days!).

It is the couple’s responsibility to obtain certified copies for any name changes. The courthouse does not give anything back to you! The certificate given by the officiant is just a keepsake document, not a legal document. These certified copies can only be obtained from the courthouse you originally obtained your license from and are $2.50 each.  You can go in person or mail in a money order.   The license is valid for 60 days, meaning it must be obtained within 60 days of your wedding.
